Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve

Owned by the Tropical Scientific Center, a leader private organization on environmental studies and tropical conservation; the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve covers an area of more than 5.000 hectares. It was established in 1974, thanks to the efforts of Wilford Guindon, one of the first Quaker settlers and biologist George Powell. It is an area of extraordinary beauty and one of the more exuberant ecosystems on the planet.


Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve

Private non-profit reserve administrated by the Santa Elena High School. It is dedicated to nature conservation, ecotourism and all profits go to the improvement of regional education. Located high on the Caribbean slopes of the Cordillera de Tilarán (5, 000 feet, 1,500 m), the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the first community managed reserves in the country. The Reserve officially opened in March 1992. It comprises an area of 310 hectares or 765 acres, and together with the Children's Eternal Rainforest, the Arenal-Tempisque Conservation Area and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve constitutes a contiguous conservation area of approximately 28,000 hectares or 69,000 acres.

The Monteverde Conservation League (MCL) is an independent, non-profit association that is dedicated to the conservation, preservation and rehabilitation of tropical ecosystems and their biodiversity. The league has worked with other organizations in more than 40 countries to help form what is now Costa Rica’s largest private reserve: The Children’s Eternal Rainforest (El Bosque Eterno de los Niños).


2. Sky Trek- Zipling-Canopy Tour

The most thrilling zip line in the country! Tour starts riding an open-air gondola from the ground to the heights where you will be dropped off at an observation area for fantastic views. From this area, you will start riding down on a zip line track in between treetops; the exhilarating adventure of zip lining down the mountainside begins; ultimately returning you to the starting point at the main building.

If you want to know how the coffee in Costa Rica is made, this is your chance! Experience history and tradition in a real Costa Rican coffee plantation.


Don Juan Coffee Tour

Don Juan offers an exciting opportunity to participate in a highly entertaining and interactive tour. You will get the chance to partake in some of the very traditional processes we use here on our coffee plantation, that make it possible for us to produce such a rich tasting Costa Rican coffee. You will also enjoy a small demonstration about sugar cane and cacao. Tours are available every day at 8 and 10 in the morning, 1:00, 3:00 and 6:00 p.m.


Trapiche Tour

El Trapiche tour, is a Costa Rican family business where you can enjoy a 2 hours tour. The tour begins with a short walk through the farm where you can get a glimpse of plantations as sugar cane, coffee, bananas, plantains, tubers, oranges and more. Enjoy the entire coffee process, ride a Costa Rican ox cart and experience the process of making liquor out of the sugar cane and to finish delight yourself with a fragrant cup of coffee. Tours available from Monday to Saturday at 8 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Sundays at 3 p.m. only.

Life Monteverde is an association of 12 families of Monteverde who are involved in coffee growing. Monteverde coffee is an educational tour where you learn not only about growing coffee, but also learn about sustainable practices with nature and history of Monteverde.The tour is offered twice a day at 8 am and 1.30 p.m.

4. Hanging Bridges- Selvatura

Walk on eight different bridges with various lengths ranging between 150 feet ( 50 meters ) up to 510 feet ( 170 meters ) and altitudes ranging between 36 feet ( 12 meters) up to 180 feet ( 60 meters ). Each bridge has a width of five feet, the widest bridges in Costa Rica, and also a capacity of up to 80 people per bridge making them both the longest and strongest bridge systems in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The Tree Top Walkways are suitable for people of all ages. The duration of the hike usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours.

6. Nightwalk- Kinkajou

For those who want to observe the forest and its creatures at night. It is the perfect place to observe different species of animals such as: sloths, armadillos, porcupines, possums, coatis, bassaricyon (olingos) y kinkajous (martillas). It also has a vast variety of insects, birds, and various amphibians and reptiles.

7. Horseback Riding

Visit extensive pastures, coffee and banana plantations and panoramic views of the Gulf of Nicoya between patches of secondary forest. Ride for approximately 1.5 hours and return to the stable for the short drive back to Claro de Luna.

Visit the “Comité de Artesanas de Santa Elena y Monteverde”. At the women´s artist coop in Monteverde you can find handcrafted souvenirs such as stationery, jewelry and t-shirts decorated with the Famous Quetzal.


Monteverde Footprints

It is a tour organized by The Monteverde Community Fund, where it is intended that both national and foreign tourists learn about the history and culture of the area, innovations in sustainability of some companies, the role of women in local development, production of organic and handmade chocolate, conservation of ecological treasures and local artists and creative works of them by walking around town. It starts in the Monteverde Institute and it goes through the Children's Eternal Rainforest, Caburé cafeteria, CASEM, The Art Gallery and it ends at the premises of Monteverde Community Fund. The tour departs from Monday to Saturday, at 8:00 am to 2: 00 pm, reservations required.
